Seed Saving 101

September 24, 2025 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Join us Wednesday, September 24th from 4 to 6 p.m. for a hands-on introduction to seed collecting. Learn how to identify, collect, and store seeds of native trees and plants ethically and effectively, using GreenUP Ecology Park as our classroom!

This seed collecting workshop will be led by Hayley Goodchild, interim manager of landscape programs at GreenUP, and Sammy Tangir, regional seed supply coordinator at Kawartha Land Trust.

Sammy holds an Environmental Studies degree from Toronto Metropolitan University and has worked in outdoor education, seed farming, and ecological restoration. She is deeply passionate about the living earth and is ever-weaving earth-infused crafts into her life, like basket weaving, natural paint making, and spoon carving. She is a willow farmer and budding botanist who aspires to be as good as squirrels at storing, planting, and processing seeds.

Hayley (she/her) holds a certificate in Landscape Design from Toronto Metropolitan University and a PhD in Environmental History from McMaster. In recent years, Hayley has redeveloped an on-site plant propagation program at GreenUP Ecology Park to generate plant materials for sale at the native plant and tree nursery, and for use in local restoration efforts.

Pre-registration via Eventbrite is required. Register here. All participants must be 16 or older unless accompanied by an adult. Participants under 18 will require written parental permission in advance.
