Spring Work Bee at the Nursery

April 15 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Close-up, low-angle view of nursery plant trays on damp ground, filled with soil and covered in wet leaves, pine needles, and organic debris at GreenUP’s Ecology Park Nursery. Young perennial royal ferns (osmunda regalis) are emerging from dormancy, with small green fronds just beginning to come up. Each plant is marked with a labeled tag showing an image of the mature fern. The foreground is in sharp focus, emphasizing the textures of soggy mulch, decomposing leaves, and the edges of the trays. The background is softly blurred, where several people kneel and work to remove mulch from plant trays. A bright orange shirt stands out among muted earth tones, and one red and two black wheelbarrows are faintly visible.

At GreenUP Ecology Park, the arrival of spring cues a long-standing ritual . . . the annual “Untuck”. Staff and volunteers gather to gently remove layers of leaf mulch from nursery plants. This careful work reveals the first signs of life beneath – the tiny green shoots of native plants waking from a long winter’s rest.

Alongside this delicate work, the team is busy assembling new nursery tables and refreshing the space, setting the stage for another year of growth at the park.
