Hugelkultur Hands-On Volunteer Workshop in HASTINGS

October 4 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
A raised garden bed built via the Hugelkultur method.

Hugelkultur is a raised‑bed gardening method that uses buried wood — logs, branches, and other organic debris — topped with compost and soil to create a long‑lasting, self‑watering, nutrient‑releasing mound. It originated in Eastern Europe and is widely used in permaculture for drought‑resistant, high‑fertility, self-tiling beds that are slightly warmer for an extended growing season.

Join us in Hastings to learn about the many benefits of the Hugelkultur method while building one too!

Tasks will involve:

  • A short lecture on Hugelkulture
  • Constructing a raised bed according to Hugelkultur principles

What to Bring:

  • Comfortable clothes that can get dirty, long pants and closed-toed shoes
  • Sun protection
  • Packed lunch/snacks
  • Water bottle

Where to Meet:

1130 River Rd., Hastings. Feel free to park on the street.

What’s the Impact?

Not moving ash wood that could be contaminated with the emerald ash borer is important in containing the spread of this invasive species and the damage it causes to our ash tree population.

Finding a use for tree and plant biomass on our properties instead of burning, or paying to dispose of it, is a win-win situation.
